Lush website analysis:

The lush website first greets you with this page, asking you if you want to look at their gift range of products or just their normal site, and also gives you the option to change the language the site is in if necessary.

PURPOSE OF WEBSITE

Similar website to what I'm making:

I have chosen to make a website for my dad as he makes wooden machines that he sells all over the world, but doesn't have a proper way of advertising them. He normally goes on online forums and shares his work, people express an interest and they start emailing about the possibility of him making one for them.

I think that this would be very beneficial for him as it will show all his past and present work, as well as having an option to purchase a machine if that's what my client wants to do. All his necessary contact information will be on there so it's easy to contact him as well for any questions they may have for him.

This website shows various different wooden machines that people have made, as well as an in depth description of what they are and how they're made. I'm not much of a fan of this site as it's quite boring to look at and very basic; the colours are very limited and looks as if it's been thrown together quickly and without much thought.

Here is an example of how the site works. There are no buttons like there normally is on a website; it just shows links to the machines that people have made and takes you to a different part of the site.

At the bottom of the page though, it does show there locations of the site you can visit, such as marble machines. But it is quite confusing to navigate around as you have to go to other pages in order to be able to other part of the site; it isn't all clearly set out on the one page and the pages just aren't very clear. You would expect them to all be listed at the top so it's easy for people to access, but this way makes it confusing and difficult to navigate around.

The purpose of my website is to show the machines that my client makes as well as having the option to purchase them if that's what my client wishes to do. It will also show some information about the machines and the history behind them, as well as some information as to how he's made them and some photos demonstrating this process.

It will also show some information about himself so that people can see who he is, what he does for a living as well as anything he may want to say about the machines he makes.

How to make a banner with a gradient:

Firstly, use the rectangular marquee tool to create a rectangle in which the banner will be. Nothing will be outside of this box. To do a gradient, first select the gradient tool (pictured below) and select 2 colours that you want.

Once you have the colour, click and drag the mouse across the selected area and it will make a gradient.

I like the logo on this website as it's very fitting with the overall site and even includes a small bit of information about what the page is about. I like the colours they used as they all fit together well, and some pictures are included which showcase some of the machines etc. that people make. If you roll the mouse across "The Automata Blog" it takes you to the home page of the blog so you can access deferent areas of the site.

I'm not too fond of the rest of the page as it's quite bland and doesn't include many pictures, and there isn't an easy way of seeing what's on the whole page as there isn't any subheadings/drop down menus.

I like the use of the slideshow on this site as it's an easy, yet effective way of showing off what they have previously made. It's the first thing you see when going on the site so straight away you are seeing what work they have previous done.

I also like the drop down menus as it tell you about the company and what they do. The text goes grey when you roll over it, but the "About Us" button is the only one that has a top down menu. It's simple, yet the colours fit well with the site and gives a nice pop of colour. I would like to try and incorporate drop down menus on my site as well as the colour changing aspect when you scroll over a button. I like how the site isn't just about woodwork; it's about a community and what activities there are to do at the centre. It shows people that live there as well as work they have down. Although I do like this feature, I won't be using it for my website as I want to focus on the machines my client builds and a way of selling them.

This is how I would like the "History" page to look like. This talks about the history of the antikythera mechanism and the basics that people need to know about it. It will include some pictures that show the original machine as well as other ones that people have recreated too. I will speak with my client to get some information from them to see what they can tell me about it as well as doing my own research on the topic to gain a better understanding of it for myself.

I will be using fairly simple colours so that the page isn't too over the top and allows the viewers to focus on whats being presented to them in terms of actual content. The slide show at the top will show most of the pictures of the machines history, and some of the pictures throughout will be things relating to it, such as the discovery of the original machine, where it was found, where it currently is etc. All of this will give the viewers a better understanding of what it is my client makes and why it's so interesting. I will aim to make this page as interesting as people so that people are encouraged to read more about it as well as exploring the rest of the page, and maybe even seeing about purchasing a machine.

  1. Hannah... you have analysed websites defining the requirements of this medium. You have a coherent blogger and investigation of the client's requirements. You have recently detailed user flow and plans for each page of your site. You are now applying and showing competency in skills and capturing this in screenshots in Ps and Muse. Begin to evaluate each stage of your website development and show how your research is applied extensively to your client's new site. You must complete your user flow of each page by Friday 1st march.
